Why and How to Install Gutter Guards

There are many different kinds of gutter guards, but all kinds are attached to the top of already existing gutters. They simply allow rainwater to pass through the gutters, while preventing debris from falling off into the downspouts. They can also be called a “rain gutter guard,” since they function in much the same way. A round, rectangular, or curved guard is usually preferred, since it allows for a more even distribution of water, which can reduce pressure in the gutters. The actual guard may be made out of metal, vinyl, plastic, or some type of mesh. The mesh type has the least amount of overlapping, allowing rainwater to flow smoothly into the gutter system without clogging.

If you live on a roof, you have two options for a gutter guard. Your first option is to use metal, which will likely be quite pricey since this material is very heavy. Another option is to use shingles. While these will work on any type of roof, they are most effective on asphalt shingles. Shingles are typically quite affordable, easy to install, and very durable.

Before you begin installing your gutter guard, there are some things that you need to take into consideration. First, you need to decide where you want the guard to go. Usually, you should install it on the outside perimeter, near the edge of the outer edge of the roof. This is where the water will end up before making it through the gutter to the downspout. Depending on the size of your roof, this might be adequate, but if you are installing an additional one as part of a separate section, you’ll probably need to make sure that it extends to this area as well.

Once you’ve decided where you want to install your gutter guard, you have two more options. You can either purchase a do-it-yourself kit or buy one that is pre-fabricated. If you opt for the do-it-yourself kit, be sure to check if the parts you need are included in the price. Some of the kits that sell do not include the screws necessary to install the shingles. Pre-fabricated shingles come with all the necessary hardware and the proper screws and other pieces. These also tend to be more expensive than do-it-yourself kits.

The main thing that you’ll need to consider is how long you plan to keep the gutter guard in place. Different types of gutters will work best depending on the length of time that you will be keeping them in place. For instance, metal gutters will last the longest. They are more stable and will not break down as easily over time. However, they are prone to rusting and other forms of deterioration. Vinyl shingles tend to be the least expensive, but are not as durable as metal gutters.

Whatever you choose to do, these DIY projects are definitely worth undertaking. The main benefit is that you can save money on professional landscaping services. Also, by doing the work yourself, you can be guaranteed that the screens you are installing will work best with your specific set of circumstances. Even if you aren’t skilled at DIY, most of the DIY projects will be much easier than installing metal gutters or shingles.
